Google’s new security features to protect users from unverified apps

Google Docs phishing debacle, the search engine giant has been adding quite a few new security features for its services and apps. The latest update by Google brings security support and blocks the unverified apps. Google is adding a new warning screen for any apps from developers that haven’t gone through Google’s app verification system.

Computer security concept

This new warning screen will alert users that the app they will be using hasn’t been verified from them yet and they will have to proceed at their own risk. If you anyway want to access the unverified app then you have to type in “continue” to move beyond the warning screen.

However, similarly, Apple has the same process in place for OS X called Gatekeeper. This warning also contains the name of the app and its developer to further help the user in screening out the phishing attempts.

At present, this new security features by Google only work for the new apps. We expect Google to bring this feature for the existing apps in next couple of months.

It is a good measure to strengthen the security for some accidental clicks.

EU’s Daily Fine of $660,000 for Qualcomm continues

0

Qualcomm, the U.S based chip-maker is in a deep trouble. The fine imposed by EU anti-trust regulators to stay, as the company loses an appeal against the above said penalty.

The legal Battle between EU regulatory commission and Qualcomm came to an end in a verdict held at European Court on Monday. Qualcomm failed to provide necessary documents demanded by the commission.

Earlier, the penalty was imposed by European commission onto Qualcomm for using unfair, monopolistic practices to suppress its rival Icera – A British semiconductor company.

Case History

  • On Dec 8, 2015 EU anti-trust commission charged $660,000-a-day fine to Qualcomm.
  • The commission alleges, the company for using unfair, monopolistic practices to counter its British rival, Icera.
  • Qualcomm filed an appeal against the penalty in the Court.
  • Qualcomm unable to submit the required files. Court President Marc Jaeger dismissed the appeal in a July 12 ruling.
  • Ultimately, Qualcomm losing the case.

According to its court filing. Qualcomm said the request involved an extensive amount of work and incurred financial costs estimated to be no less than three million euros ($3.45 million).

The appeal all the way gone futile. As the court found no viability for the reason put forth by the company in its inability of presenting the documents.

Legal battles are now becoming more common in the tech world. Companies alleging each other always include enormous amount of wealth in danger. Patent cases, copyright infringement being some of the forms. (Still, there is a long way to go until the MNC’s corporate with each other, keeping the greed for wealth and profit aside for the better technological development).
