ESPN has announced that for the first time ever, action sports fans will be able to live stream the summer X Games in immersive virtual reality. Using Samsung’s VR app and Gear VR headset, ESPN will offer an immersive view of the event taking place July 13-16 in Minneapolis.
In a press release on Friday, ESPN revealed that they will team up with Samsung to broadcast three events — Skateboard Vert, BMX Street, and Skateboard Street Amateurs — live to 48 countries. The live stream will be available for users with Samsung Gear VR through the Samsung VR app.
Tim Reed, the vice president of the X Games, said in the press release that, “X Games has always been a laboratory for innovation and progression. We are always pushing to create new and better ways for fans to experience and interact with X Games. Working with Samsung to produce these three great events for Gear VR is an awesome example of that.”
X Games Minneapolis will begin from July 13 and will run through July 16 at the newly-opened U.S. Bank Stadium. The Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch are getting a big, but temporary, price cut. Starting today, for the next six weeks, VR headset and motion controller are available for $399 at all stores (Best Buy, Amazon, and all others where it’s available).
The Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch bundle will sell for $399, which is nearly a $200 discount to the normal price. It’s part of Oculus’ summer-long attempt to endorse the Rift, now that it’s been out for over a year.
According to Oculus Vice President of content Jason Rubin, the sale is there with the aim to draw people who “may have been sitting on the sideline because of price,” and people who might not have been considering the Rift to look at its growing app and game library.
Buyers will still need a gaming computer to use the Rift, and so there’s no bundle discount for them as part of this sale. However, the VP Rubin notes that the price of an Oculus-approved PC has dropped progressively over the previous year, especially after Oculus introduced a lower minimum specification — you can currently get one for around $650.
