HTC One VS Sony Xperia Z

HTC One VS Sony Xperia Z

It is a flagship Smartphone Smackdown as we do a comparison between HTC One and Sony Xperia Z. Sony’s previous high end smartphones haven’t hit the mark in the past but with Xperia Z the company finally has a true contender. Sony Xperia Z has a very fast CPU with 2GB of RAM , it has the full HD screen, water resistant properties, etc. But HTC One outclassed Sony xperia on few important fronts. Both the Phones runs on Android 4.1.2.  For more information on the phones read our reviews of HTC One and Sony Xperia Z . Now lets review the comparison between HTC One and Sony Xperia Z in detail on various fronts.

Design

Sony Mobile and HTC are known to pour their creativity in the products they offer to consumers. Sony takes their smartphone designs to the next level with the new Xperia Z smartphone that also promises resistance against water spills and dust and it weights only 146g. On the other hand HTC also offers its uniquely designed smartphone with the aluminium chassis which is 9.3 mm thick and weights only 143g.

Which looks better? That’s a matter of personal preference, but I think that most people will gravitate toward the unibody aluminum HTC One. Sony Xperia Z is look like yet another rectangular slab coated with glass in a sea of like-minded smartphones. The HTC One has a unique and eye catching design that screams quality. We also feel safer with metal than glass.

Display

Both HTC One and Xperia Z has the large 1920 x 1080 displays. Sony Xperia Z has large 5 inch full HD Reality Display and has very high pixel density – 443 pixels per inch. When we go to HTC One it has 4.7 inch Full HD display with slightly higher PPI of 469. There are small point difference like ppi.

Sony Xperia Z’s TFT panel with Mobile Bravia 2 looks quite great until you see it next to the superior Super LCD3 display of the HTC One. It is more brighter than Xperia Z, and has greater contrast. Both are easily viewable outdoors. Although in size the display panel of  Sony Xperia Z is slightly bigger than HTC One but after reviewing the other features of HTC’s display we must say HTC is a winner in this section.

Processing Power

Now we come to the processor power of both the phones. Both feels very fast as Sony Xperia Z is powered with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad core Processor clocked at 1.5GHz. Where as HTC One comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad core 1.7GHz. Both the phones comes with 2 GB of RAM.

According to the Quadrant Benchmarks HTC One clearly wins in this section also. Benchmarks are shown below:

Storage

Micro SD

The HTC One will be available with either 32GB or 64GB storage options that can’t be expanded further where as Sony Xperia Z is available with 16GB on board which can be upgraded to 32 GB. Both phones have USB host OTG and work with USB flash drives (micro USB OTG cable required to make use of USB host).

Camera

Sony Xperia Z  is powered with a 13.1-megapixel unit on the back with autofocus and LED flash, which is capable of Full HD video capture at 30fps and on the front is a 2.2-megapixel camera that also supports 1080p video capture for video calling. Where as HTC brings the new technology and innovation in their Phone with an UltraPixel unit with a 4-megapixel sensor that is capable if 1080p video recording.

Although Xperia Z has higher resolution but HTC One does much better with color rendering, painting a pretty accurate picture, while the Xperia Z oversaturates the colors. Here are some of the samples of Both cameras:

Battery

Both the phones are evenly matched in this section as they both had approximately same capacity of power in their batteries. HTC One has 2300 mAh Li-Polymer battery while the Sony Xperia Z uses a 2330 mAh Li-Ion battery. Comparing both the phones on talk time HTC One has impressive 13 hours and 38 minutes talk time on the other hand Xperia z has incredible 16 hours and 3 minutes, On Web browsing HTC One has the amazing 9h and 58 minutes of browsing endurance on a single charge while Xperia Z has only an average 6h 37m score here and came far behind its competitor, On video playback HTC one got the great score i.e. the phone just exceeding the 10 hour mark where as Xperia Z died at about half-wait point – 5h 39min.

Now as we review all the aspects of the batteries of both phones. we must say that HTC One wins in this section also.

Vertict

Both the phones have great qualities in them. Although Sony Xperia Z has the water resistant properties in it which are not present in HTC One but the phone from HTC has defeated Xperia Z in almost every section other than this. So if you want your Smartphone to be water resistant than go for Sony Xperia Z and if you want the Smartphone which is more powerful and have innovations in the technology than go for HTC One.

  1. I’ve been using the Sony Xperia Z for 3 months and as you’re right pointed out the battery life is not quite up to the mark. The phone needs charging every 7-8 hours which is a bit annoying. There’s a Stamina mode but it’s useless as it turns off all your data connections.
